Vacation 2010, Day 05, May 19

The day started with waffles and Bacon in the RV. After breakfast we drove from Coarsegold back to Fresno on Hwy-41. In Fresno we went to the Forestiere Underground Gardens and took a tour. It seems about 100 years ago this fellow Baldasare Forestiere immigrated from Sicily to grow oranges. He bought 80 acres of land in Fresno, but the land was nothing but hardpan and couldn't be used for farming. It was hot in Fresno so he decided to dig a basement to keep cool. He kept digging room and tunnels until it covered about ten acres. He found he could grow trees in the rooms if he left the top open. The pictures are an orange tree that is 100 years old and still bearing fruit. the other is his kitchen. After the tour we drove north on Hwy-99 to Hwy-152 west to Gilroy. the garlic capital of the world. We started smelling garlic about ten miles from town. Found a place to spend the night at Gilroy Garlic U.S.A. RV Park. Had beef stroganoff, noodles, green beans and salad in the RV
