Vacation 2001 Day: 13
Left Holbrook going east on I40 to Chambers, turned north on 191 to Chinle Az. Found a place to camp at the Cottonwood National Park campground. It's free but no hook-ups.
Walked over to the Thunderbird Lodge and got tickets for the afternoon half day tour of Canyon De Chelly. Our tour guide was a Navajo Indian named David who loaded us up in a four wheel drive flat-bed truck with seats bolted on the back.
From the lodge we took off up the canyon, no roads only dirt tracks in the river bottom. David stopped along the way to show us petroglyphs, and ancient ruins in the canyon walls which are over 700 feet tall.
After the tour we returned to the RV and grilled burgers, and listened to Indians sing and play drums somewhere near the campground until after 10PM.
