Day 22

Date: 05/03/2005

Got a cab from the RV park to Fisherman's Warf. Had Breakfast at IHOP then went to board our boat for the Island Hop Tour which includes stops at Angel Island and Alcatraz Island. After getting in line to board the boat we realized we were in the middle of a fifth grade field trip which included several classes and a couple of hundred students. Fortunately after arriving at Angel Island the kids went there way and we went ours. We immediately found our way to the tram tour and found we were in the middle of another field trip, this time senior citizens complete with walkers and care givers. The tram tour lasted a little longer than the hour it was supposed to (due to an extended potty stop for the seniors) but everything turned out OK. We learned the island served as an army post from the Civil War until the 1960's. it was also an immigration detention and processing center similar to Ellis Island on the east coast. After the tram we had some ice cream and boarded the Island Hop boat for Alcatraz (no kids or seniors). On Alcatraz we took a self guided audio tour of the cell house then wandered around the island. After touring Alcatraz we got back on the boat and returned to Fisherman's Warf and wandered around the shops on Pier 39 until 5:00PM when we met up with an old friend, Barbara (Webster) Webb and had a fine seafood dinner at a restaurant on the end of the pier. Then took a cab back to the RV park.
