Vacation 2013, Day 20 June 27 Ave Maria Grotto at St. Bernard Abby, Natural Bridge of Alabama Click pictures to enlarge Breakfast at Cracker Barrel. Went to see Ave Maria Grotto at St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman AL. The Grotto consists of a landscaped hillside of 125 small stone and cement structures, the handiwork of Brother Joseph Zoetl, a monk of the Abbey for almost 70 years. Our guide, Mr. Leo Schwaiger has labored to preserve Brother Joseph's work since 1963 and has made several additions to the Grotto. After visiting the Grotto we left Cullman on US-278 West to Natural Bridge AL where we saw a natural sandstone bridge that spans 148 feet, the longest natural bridge east of the Rockies. After the Grotto we got on HWY-13 South to I-20 East to Pell City AL where we ate supper at another Cracker Barrel. The we found a place to stay at Lakeside Landing Marina and RV Park on Logan Martin Lake in Cropwell AL.
